Tudor-Style Birdhouses
My “Avian Estates” series of dollhouse-scale birdhouses was inspired by Disney whimsy and Tudor-style country house design. If you have been on the Story Book ride at the original Disneyland in Anaheim, these may look familiar.
They were intended to be displayed inside the homes of birdhouse collectors, although we did place one of them in our own garden to see how long it would last. It lasted more than two years, including two Seattle winters, and yes, birds did crap on it. With a few repairs to the roof and a few other elements, it could probably go another couple years, although we never intended these creations to be outdoor birdhouses.
Our birdhouses have been featured at several venues, including the Van Dusen garden show in Vancouver, BC, the Chochokum Arts Festival and the Island County Fair, both on Whidbey Island, Washington, and Sunset Magazine’s “Tastes of Sunset” show on Seattle’s “Eastside” (Bellevue).
